During this period, Evolve not only experienced revenue growth but also expanded its workforce, which doubled within a few months and continues to grow on a weekly basis. Neil proceeded to inform the panel about Evolve’s rebranding efforts, which aimed to align the company more closely with its core values. The organisation sought to reaffirm its mission of helping multi-site brands unlock their potential through network technologies. Emphasising fairness as part of their values and ethos, Evolve ensures that team members’ shift patterns are rotated and distributed equitably, despite their service desk operating around the clock. The conversation then shifted to the importance of workplace design, which holds great significance at Evolve. They prioritise creating a collaborative, well-lit, and functional space. In 2022, Evolve invested £450K in their new office in Wigan, ensuring it was conducive to hybrid collaborative work. Being a technology-oriented company, Evolve places a strong emphasis on automation and innovative ways of working, making it crucial to provide the best possible working environment for their employees. While acknowledging the prevalence of AI in everyday life and its benefits in code refinement and development, Evolve firmly believes that AI can never fully replace human workers. The conversation then turned to the evolving attitudes of businesses towards their colleagues, a subject that deeply resonates with Evolve in their day-to-day work environment. Citing a study by the Royal Society for Public Health, they highlighted the challenges faced by individuals working from home, such as reduced connection to colleagues (67% of businesses), difficulty maintaining work-life boundaries (56%), and the need for mental health support (34%). Recognising the inherent need for collaboration, Evolve places humans at the centre of their business operations. From order management to fault management to the simplicity of ordering the complete solution, Nexus provides a clear and comprehensive platform for resellers. Q: Are there any resellers currently signed up for the reseller channel? Who are the current partners? A: MLR Networks is our first partner to gain access to the reseller channel. They are a local company based in Runcorn, located in the northwest. We have worked collaboratively with MLR Networks to understand their specific requirements and ensure the portal’s functionalities meet their needs effectively. We are expanding this reseller customer base currently and are excited to welcome new, strategic partners to the channel.  Q: Could you explain the development process behind the Nexus portal? A: Once we decided to create the portal, we quickly realised that we could integrate it seamlessly with our existing systems, leveraging our extensive experience in developing our internal systems. Our in-house development team, which dedicates approximately 200 hours per week to development, aimed to prioritise the customer experience by focusing on the speed and ease of the order process. The functionality of the portal aims to support our customers’ ongoing business growth. Q: Adam mentioned his passion for owning the whole delivery process. Can you elaborate on that and the benefits of having an in-house development team? A: We have always been committed to owning the entire delivery process, which includes developing all our solutions in-house. This approach allows us to have full control over the development process and adapt to the varying needs of our partners. Off-the-shelf products often fall short of meeting specific requirements, and having our own development team enables us to tailor solutions to individual partners’ needs. We can customise the portal to align with partners’ workflows, processes, and support guides, ensuring ease of use and transparency. Q: In terms of integration and coverage, what capabilities does the reseller channel offer? A: Our development process enables us to quickly onboard new Internet Service Providers (ISPs), resulting in fast integration capabilities. Currently, we have integrated with eight carriers, providing us with extensive UK coverage. Our strategic alignment with partners and carriers allows us to offer integration possibilities with nearly any entity. In the direct space, we have demonstrated our commitment by taking ownership of 86% of all support tickets raised last year. In aid of International Women in Engineering Day Evolve wanted to get their amazing women involved, so they spent the time to sit down and speak to two of their engineering team – Jessica Neilson and Hannah McGrath. Evolve believes it is incredibly important to speak up about women in engineering and the impact they have on the industry. Their discussion with Hannah and Jess led to great insight into what it is like to be a woman in engineering, both in the industry and at Evolve. Continue reading to find out what they said… Lancashire, UK – 2023 Introduce yourselves and your role at Evolve. “Hello, my name is Jessica, and I have been at Evolve since September 2020, my current role here is Technical Support Shift Supervisor following a recent promotion. Before this, I was one of the 2nd Line Technical Engineers.” “Hi, my name is Hannah. I was the person who finished school and didn’t know where to go career-wise, My college varied from beauty therapy to public services to business studies, and I still wasn’t sure about the path that I would take. I started at Evolve in September 2022 as a 1st line technical support engineer after wanting more of a challenge and something new. I was recently promoted after 6 months of being at Evolve.” What do you enjoy about being an engineer at Evolve? Jess commented, “Working at Evolve provides different challenges every day and allows all of our engineers to push themselves intellectually, gaining knowledge on a wide array of technology and solutions – this is what makes working at Evolve so exciting. Working together to solve problems and gain a deep understanding of complex systems ensures that any problems we encounter are dealt with efficiently and effectively – leading to better outcomes in the long run. A lot of the issues we deal with are picked up and resolved proactively before the customer is even aware, this is different from any place I have worked before. This provides us with a great sense of achievement in our role and pushes us to expand our knowledge and skills – aiming to become the best engineers possible. Evolve supports everyone no matter what level, providing them with continuous learning opportunities, whether this is in-house training or enrolling employees on professional courses in which we are given the opportunity to gain globally recognised certifications. We also can request certifications we would like to complete – they are not just from a pre-defined list. This is important given the nature of our industry where technology is always evolving. It is essential for us to proactively keep ourselves informed and up to date in these areas. By doing so, we can effectively adapt to emerging trends, incorporate innovative solutions, and maintain the highest standards of performance, security, and efficiency.” Hannah then added, “I enjoy the problem-solving that comes with the role, no two days are the same and we often encounter many different challenges and obstacles. I enjoy analysing issues, identifying solutions to those issues, and implementing them effectively. Every issue is highly satisfying to resolve no matter how big or small, and very rewarding. Especially when the customer on the other end is thrilled with your outcome!  Another aspect I appreciate about being a network engineer is the many different learning opportunities we have in this field; we have a lot of opportunities to grow and a lot of different paths we can take here, depending on where our interests lie and what skills we are strongest in, it can be a great career path.”  Why do you think more women should join engineering? When Jess was positioned with this question she said, “There are so many types of engineering roles, but overall for me, it is all about using skills such as critical thinking, problem-solving, collaboration and communication which can help to transform the industry. I believe it could bring a fresh perspective and contribute to a more inclusive industry, where no one should feel like they cannot simply because of their gender.” When asked the same question Hannah commented, “I think it is a great field of work to be involved in and more women should consider this career path. I know it is primarily a male-dominated field, but you shouldn’t let that stop you. more and more women are joining and are becoming very successful within this industry, and climbing through the ladders to the top. It gives women more of a chance to be able to show off their talents and skills somewhere which provides the best training and supports whichever engineering path you’d like to go down; the opportunities are endless and there is something here for everyone.” Do you have any advice for any women starting their careers in engineering? “Never let gender be the reason you are told no. Always make your voice heard and allow your knowledge and skills in the field to make an impact. It is important to make sure you are always aware of ever-emerging technologies which can help build confidence and able you to believe you are more than worthy to be in this field. I truly understand it can be scary at first, from the moment you walk into your new workspace, and you are the only female in the room, but you should use this as an encouragement to push yourself to be the best in the room.” Jess went on to add, “It is also important to find the right company and working environment. In the series, the Barclays team is travelling around the UK talking to businesses about a whole host of important topics in relation to banking. In this first episode, Alan opens up about Evolve’s experience acquiring a business and the steps they took to complete a successful acquisition. He talks in depth about the benefits and challenges that were faced throughout the growth process and going through an acquisition. Alan Stephenson-Brown was joined by Paul Kempster, Co-Head of Mid Corporate, Andrea Delay, MD at Barclays and Sham Patel, relationship director; they joined Alan at Evolve’s new office in Wigan. In 2022, Evolve BG Limited acquired IT services company GB3 Limited. GB3, originally based in Preston is a technology solutions company delivering strategy, systems and support to businesses, charities and education. In the podcast, Alan mentions the initial thought process of organic growth, he goes on to say: “We did look at the option of organic growth and moving into IT services, but to be able to do that, it was probably going to take us three years to be able to get to the stage where we could actually offer an acceptable service to customers.
