The Full Fibre Roll Out
The UK is currently behind the rest of the EU when it comes to the reach of full fibre connectivity. However, the demand for higher bandwidth is increasing as the number of connected devices per household grows. The COVID-19 pandemic has also led to an increase in remote working, making a reliable and high-speed at-home internet connection more important than ever. Collaboration tools such as Teams, which grew from 2 million users in 2017 to 75 million in 2020, have also seen significant growth in usage, requiring a better internet infrastructure. Although Openreach remains the biggest infrastructure provider for UK connectivity, the full fibre landscape is continually evolving to provide customers with a wider choice of providers. To ensure the best availability of full fibre services, partnerships have been established with alternative network providers, and all live connections on the network are proactively checked each week for full fibre availability.
The Big Switch Off
The Wholesale Line Rental (WLR) service, allowing businesses and households to rent phone lines, will be phased out and switched off by December 2025. The technology is outdated and inefficient for providing high-speed broadband services. WLR is being replaced with two new technologies: Single Order Generic Ethernet Access (SOGEA) and Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP). SOGEA enables direct internet connection without a landline phone service, while FTTP provides ultrafast broadband speeds of up to 1 Gbps.
